Remove

I have been in contact with an agent asking why the remove in the contextual tool bar within Beta isn't already in PS. I am a School Sports Tog and therefore my procedure is isolate subject, remove from backround and then blur and put back subject. this is procedure for every photo i publish. under GDPR  rules i have to and in some instances like when shooting athletics controlled by English Associations have to guarantee it. the remove tool in beta is just what i needed because currently PS replaces the subject with something else and sometimes really obscure so i end up in a loop ending up going back to conventional ways to remove and then blur. so i am now working all the time in Beta because it does what i need and rarely go into PS. can i please ask for this facility to be moved up the priority list and released into PS as soon as possible

Hi @Ham5766

Thanks for reaching out! The Remove tool is already available in the GA version of Photoshop 26.8. You should be able to access it directly from the toolbar.

Let us know if you’re having trouble locating it or if it’s not working as expected—we’re happy to help!

Regards,

Srishti

The same place in both. Beta shows the Remove tab in the contextual tool bar and PS doesn’t. If it’s there, I can’t find it!

In addition, people keep telling me it there but it isn't. The remove your pointing to just removes the selection and replaces it with something else. The remove in the contextual tool removes the object selected and fills it with its surroundings and does not put something else like your trying to remove in its place.

Try resetting the Photoshop preferences and let us know if that helps: How to Reset Photoshop Preferences

We recommend resetting preferences manually for the best results. Don’t forget to back up your existing preferences before doing so, just in case you need to restore them later.

Let us know how it goes!

No. No one got back to me after my post and despite doing the latest update it still doesn’t show remove in the contextual tab. Given up asking as I keep being shown and told about the remove tool BUT THIS IS THE REMOVE AS PART OF THE CONTEXTUAL TOOLBAR. they are not the same thing!

I'm having difficulty following your reasoning. If the Beta version does what you need, then why do you not just use the Beta version?

I also wonder if the Remove Tool activated from the CTB uses the current settings in the Options Bar — surely lit does — and if you have different settings in the beta and release versions.

If you have a particular workflow that saves you time, then consider creating an action.  You would need to make a selection, but if  Sample All Layers is turned on, your action could create a new layer, apply the Remove Tool, and add the blur. Set one of the Function keys to activate the Action, and that would be even quicker than using the CTB.

It's good that you are finding the CTB helpful.  I think it's one of best new features in recent times.  I love that it puts exactly the tool or feature you need right next to the cursor.  I begrudge every wasted millimetre of cursor movement, and love anything that saves me a second here and there.

I'll add my support to having the release version add the Remove tool to the CTB, and I expect it will happen reasonably soon.  We have just had a Release verion update, so it will be several weeks at least.

Thanks for reply.

Because im a school sport photographer and removing the subject and blurring the background is done on every picture i take for GDPR purposes the remove in the CTB replaces the subject with the surrounding area. If I use the remove tool in the toolbar it replaces the subject with something else! So I highlight the subject and remove the area and low behold it replaces it with something else or it doesnt do such a good job ass the CTB remove.

Doing all the other things sugested if its in the Beta version is a step backwards for me. yes, i can continue to use the Beta as it does what i want but it doesnt put all my other actions in place only the general version on my mac under your actions plus everytime theres anupdatee i have to reset my keyboard settings.

My question originally was with the type of photography I do and the need to blurr out other subjects that are in the picture for GDPR purposes, the Beta version of CTB does exactly what i want it to do and saves me hourst in editing. Why cant I have in the version of Photoshop that I pay for and not the version i dont.

As an alternative suggestion, before "AI Remove" features were added, the process would have been something like:

  1. Select subject (cloud processing)
  2. Layer via copy (Ctrl/Cmd + J) to isolate the subject on a new layer
  3. Load the copied layer transparency as a selection
  4. Expand the selection 1-2 px
  5. Select the previous layer containing the background and subject
  6. Content Aware Fill
  7. Deselect
  8. Blur the background

Which is easy to automate into an action.

Step 6 can of course be replaced with Generative Fill with a blank/empty prompt (uses generative credits).
