Removing light outline from around subject while keeping background

I have a picture where they placed a warm light behind the subject that's making this orange outline around them and I can't figure out the best way to get rid of it. They want to keep the background too. What would the most efficient and clean way to go about this be?

A quick reduction:

  1. Dupe Background layer and set to darken blend mode
  2. Run median filter at the minimum value to remove the edgelight halo
  3. Add layer mask hiding all
  4. White brush on edge to only reveal the correction on the offending area
  5. Possibly clone tool set to color blend mode or darken blend mode to touch up where needed on another layer

 

One could use an "edge mask" from find edges filter, glowing edges or other edge finding methods, I just hand painted in this case as it was just as
