Render lighting effects not working opens up darker in Photoshop

In the newest Photohop CC 2020, I can't seem to use Render lighting effects. In my old photoshop, I used spot quite often, but now (in 2020) I open it it is just dark. It does open to the lighting menu, but nothing changes on any of the settings or sliders except ambiance which only lightens the whole image.

I thought this last upgrade might fix the issue, but apparently not.

@maraziwazi , did you try to disable the native canvas in Preferences/Technology preview, as stated in the 3D announcement?

If you look at the information in the last PS update Adobe has announced they will be discontinuing all 3d filters and lighting. They have a small workaround which works now but will be gone soon,

Unless one of you has great blackmail .... Just kidding.   Its time to kill this string.

For those of you who have followed davescm's advice for getting Light Effects and 3D to work and it DIDN'T WORK, here is some more information. I don't guarantee this will work, but it has for me (at least for the moment).

I just spent over an hour with an Adobe tech specialist. He accessed my computer. What he did was to go my user library directory: ~/library/preferences/ and changed the name of the folder called Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings to something else (don't trash it in case you need to go back to it). We then quit Photoshop and restarted. On restart, Photoshop created a new settings folder.

When I reopened Photoshop all my preferences were reset. BUT the lighting effects and 3D were working on the latest version of Photoshop. Perhaps something in my settings was corrupted. Now, I don't know if it will last and as I'm changing preferences to make the app look like it did before, I'm only changing one pref at a time, restarting, and then seeing if the lighting and 3D are working.

My "Deactivate Native Canvas" is checked in the Technology Preview prefs. And, under performance, under Advance Settings, my drawing mode is set to Advanced. I don't know if this last one has anything to do with it. But the tech did look at it (it was set to that before). Also, my iMac is about 2.5 yrs old and I've got a AMD Radeon Pro 580 graphics processor, if that helps.

BTW, I nicely but strongly complained about Adobe's lack of response to our queries about this. Not just here but on their wishlist forum (someone had posted this problem on July 27 (not the first) and Adobe hadn't responded at all. That's bad customer service. And I told my tech that.

Again, I don't guarentee this will work for others. But it's something to try.

Sorry it didn’t work for me on my m1 mac mini running latest Big Sur. 3D did but I don't know if it didn’t before. Frustrating.

That's disappointing -- especially when I am on the verge of a Mac M1 purchase!!

It is not wokring in the apple universal version. The command is not grayed out but when you select it the preview shows a oval but without any handles or control points. When you try to change it , the oval goes away and you see a rectangle which you can't do anything with.

Dave,

Thank you but it didn’t solve the problem. Now when I open the 8 bit image it either is still grayed out or when I first did it, it was showing the lighting area but there were no controls to select it , move it , resize etc. I could use the sliders to change the aspects of the filter but that is it.

Very frustrating

This is excatly what I'm seeing as well.  Before making the suggested change, the option was available, but couldn't use it.  After making the change, it then becomes greyed out.

Still today, I reset the preference inside Photoshop, I delete the preference folder, my lighting effects doesn't show the handles to move...

The problem with tacking onto the end of an old thread is that things have moved on and the cause of your issue is likely to be different.

If you are using 22.4 or 22.4.1 then read on.

Adobe are updating the core graphics functions in Photoshop. This is driven by the operating systems of Apple and Microsoft in which the old Open GL functions are being removed in the case of Apple, or deprecated in the case of Microsoft. This means that the graphics functions that have worked for years must be rewritten to use Metal and Direct X. At the same time, Adobe are sensibly updating those core functions to deliver the additional speed we require to handle the very large files of today.

Some functionality in Photoshop, such as 3D and lighting effects which uses the 3D engine, still relies on the older Open GL graphics functions. To make these work, an additional preference Preferences>Technology previews>Deactivate Native Canvas has been added. This can be checked and Photoshop restarted to restore 3D functions and lighting effects to where they were in 22.3

Following. I am having the same issue. It works intermittently. When it doesn't work, it doesn't show the move/rotate/scale length controls. I have switched the settings to reset defaults on close, restarted PS, rebooted my machine, and most of what has been discussed here. I have custom Halloween work I am doing for clients, and this is killing me.
