Question

Repeat Transform Bug. Am I crazy? Help!!

Hi All,

Im experiencing a strange issue and wondered 1. if anyone else has seen this issue and 2. If anyone has a workaround. So far I've verfieid this issue on two known good Mac OSX systems running the latest Photoshop version 22.1.1.

The issue relates to scaling when using the repeat tranform command (cmd + alt + shift + T). To replicate/test for the issue do the following:

1. Create a 2000px square with a 1px internal stroke

2. Using transform; scale the square down by -10px (maintain aspect ratio)

3. Using the repeat transform command; repeat this transformation 100 times

The issue you will see is that photoshop does not reduce the square by the specified amount. This can be visibly seen by looking at the missaligned strokes, alternativly you can verify this by viewing the dimensions of any one of the reduced squares (which should only ever end in 0, since we're reducing by the even number of 20).

It would seem that Photoshop is incapable of accuratly repeating a simple reduction. Anyone encountered this? Any ideas why? Its slowly driving me crazy! Any help appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

James

Three questions I have:

  • What is happening with some other font like Myriad Pro, for example? Do you run into same issue? It seems yes.
  • Can you expand steps to see what is recorded?
  • Did you duplicated steps in action or you record each and every step what is error prone method.

So in answer to your questions:

  • What is happening with some other font like Myriad Pro, for example? Do you run into same issue? It seems yes.

Unfortunaely the font choice doesnt matter, since the the first step of the action is to duplicate the font layer and rasterise it.

  • Can you expand steps to see what is recorded?

Absolutely, heres whats happening:

1. Font layer dupicated

2. Font layer rasterised

3. Emboss layerstyle applied to rasterised font layer (for the shadows and highlights)

4. Convert rasterised font layer to smart object (so that the layerstyle can be scaled)

5. Duplicate smart object font layer layer and transform 99.9% with centre alignment

6. Repeat transform command cmd+alt+shift + T

6. Select all transformed layers and reverse order (So that the first layer is the largest and the rest descending).

Thats pretty much it. The error is present when the duplication occurs.

  • Did you duplicated steps in action or you record each and every step what is error prone method.

Ive tried performing every step in the action as well as duplicating steps, in both cases the error occurs. There is only one transform command (scale 99.9%), the other 149 commands are 'repeat the transformation' so theres very little room for error there.

Ive attached a couple of screenshots, the first one shows the action described above performed with Myraid Pro - same result.

The second one shows the same action but with align to selection vertical and horizonal applied. - Better, but rear layers are still incorrect.

*scratching my head on this one.

If I understand correctly Photoshop records Scaling in percentages, so your approach would be doomed unless you use a Script.

What are you trying to achieve?

Please post meaningful screenshots.

Im essentially trying to create a simple scaled 3D effect as an action.

So when scaling photoshop only deals in perspectives despite viewing the reduction as pixels?

The attached screenshot shows a 100 or so layers each reduced 99.9%. My expectation was that the scaling would be even and thus give a nice perspective effect however if you look at the centre of the O & C you can see how it deviates in a strange way.

No way around this?

»So when scaling photoshop only deals in perspectives despite viewing the reduction as pixels?«

Percentages, not »perspectives«.

The »bend« seems unexpected indeed.

What is the reference point of the transformation?

Why don’t you create a 3D Extrusion?
