HELP - what's the trick to resizing an object in the new Photoshop update? Or is there a setting I have to find and fix? The 'hold SHIFT' trick is not working.

The latest version of photoshop handles resizing differently than previous versions. Constrained resizing is now the default so you don't need the shift key. Its backwards until you get use to it

How do I turn off the new proportional scaling by default behavior while transforming layers?

To revert to the legacy transform behavior, do the following:

  1. Use Notepad (Windows) or a text editor on Mac OS to create a plain text file (.txt).
  2. Type the text below in the text file:

    TransformProportionalScale 0

  3. Save the file as "PSUserConfig.txt" to your Photoshop settings folder:
    • Windows: [Installation Drive]:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 Settings\
    • macOS: //Users/[User Name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 Settings/

This! Thank you! Why I didn't try it without the SHIFT I have no idea.

What kind of object?

Ctrl+T transforms. Hold shift to unconstrain aspect ratio on pixel layers and hold shift to constrain aspect ratio on vector objects
