Right after opening the program, it becomes unresponsive

I've been experiencing a frustrating issue with Photoshop recently. Right after opening the program, it becomes unresponsive. No matter what I click – whether it's a menu, tool, or document – the program acts as if it's frozen. This unresponsiveness lasts for about a minute, after which Photoshop starts to function normally again. This problem doesn't reoccur until I close and reopen the program.

I have tried all the solutions suggested on the internet, Adobe forums, and even had a service technician try to fix the problem remotely, but nothing has helped. The issue didn't start until after a certain program update, and unfortunately, reverting to previous versions hasn't resolved the problem. Uninstalling and reinstalling an older version didn't help either.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue? How did you manage to resolve it?

Perhaps try a thorough reset of Photoshop preferences?

(read this entire post before acting please)

Resetting restores Photoshop's internal preferences, which are saved when Photoshop closes.

If they become corrupt then various issues can occur.

You may want to backup your settings and custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences.

Before you reset your preferences

in case of future issues, I suggest you make a copy as Adobe may need one to check problematic references. 

Quit Photoshop.
Go to Photoshop's Preferences folder

Note for those on macOS:

Preference preservation is affected by macOS permissions,

you’ll need to allow Photoshop ‘Full Disk Access’ in your Mac OS Preferences/Security and Privacy

If that doesn't fix the issue:

Go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Multithreaded Compositing - and restart Photoshop.

Still hanging? 

Go to Preferences > Performance... click Advanced Settings... and uncheck "GPU Compositing" - then restart Photoshop. 

Do you still have problems?

It may even be time to reinstall Photoshop.

It’s recommended that you use the Adobe CC cleaner tool to remove all traces first.

(See above about preserving preferences though! It’s worth preserving them unless they are corrupted.)

Uninstall Photoshop BUT make sure to choose the option “Yes, remove app preference”.

Once that process finishes, start the installation process and look into the “Advanced Options”. Uncheck “Import previous settings and preferences” and choose to “Remove old versions”.

Thx, but I've tried those things before, and it didn't help. Photoshop behaves the same way every time it opens. It lags for 40-60 seconds and then works normally afterward.

Are you able to look in Windows task manager and see what processes are using the CPU at the time of the slow down?

I checked this some time ago (video attached). No matter what programs I have running, Photoshop behaves the same way. After launching, you can hardly do anything for several seconds. It only responds when you move within the Photoshop window, because if you open the program and immediately minimize it to the taskbar or start doing something else in other windows, and then return to Photoshop, you still have to wait out the time when it lags. A very strange situation, and it only occurs in Photoshop. I'm slowly considering switching to different software

I can't see anything oustanding in that last video, but I do note that when I open Photoshop I get a couple extra process which open in the first few seconds but do not appear in your task manager list (although that list is not complete)

1. Adobe CEP HTML Engine (6 instances)
2. WebView 2 Manager (7 instances)

It leads me to wonder if there is an issue loading/starting these processes leading to a delayed UI intil it times out.

I tried several of the described techniques with renaming/disabling folders for CEP and WebView. Unfortunately, nothing helped. Adobe Photoshop lags for about 30-40 seconds each time it's opened—no more, no less. It happens exactly the same way every time. It’s important to note that this doesn’t work in the way where I can just open Photoshop, switch to other apps, and when I return to Photoshop after, say, 2 minutes, it will work fine. No! The lag time of 30-40 seconds starts counting only when the Photoshop window is actually active and I’m trying to click anything. This freezing happens only once per session—every time I open the program. So, if, after 30-40 seconds, the program is running normally and I minimize it to the taskbar, and then return to the program after, for example, putting the computer to sleep overnight, opening the window from the taskbar doesn’t cause any problems. It seems like I should never close the Photoshop window or shut down the computer. It’s a very strange situation. No other Adobe program freezes like this; they all work normally after opening.

Do you have any other software that might interact with PS startup, like antivirus, font managers etc? That's what this sounds like.

I've checked everything (by disabling, or even uninstalling) and nothing helped. It's strange. Every other program from the Adobe suite works immediately after opening, but only Photoshop has these lags for 30-40 seconds.

I was able to solve this issue by removing a font I recently installed (not through creative cloud but throug downloading the font file and clicking install). Try uninstalling any fonts you recently installed!

I had highly similar problem, although it didn't last 30-40 seconds. PS froze every time it opened for about 10 seconds.

For me it was because I had Remote Connections turned on.

Edit > Preferences > Plugins > uncheck Enable Remote Connections. 

Now I do not get the freezes.

Maybe you guys should make that feature asynchronous instead of a blocking call...
