Troubleshooting questions to help narrow down the cause:
- Are the contextual (right-click) menus working in any other Mac application, or are they failing only in Photoshop?
- Do the context menus pop up if you Control-click, which should always work?
If right-clicking in any application does not work but Control-click works, I think the cause is that right-click is not enabled by default on a new Mac out of the box or for a fresh macOS reinstallation. In either case, you need to make sure it’s been enabled on your new Mac. Open macOS System Settings, and what you click next depends on what kind of input device you are using.
- If you’re using a mouse, click Mouse settings and make sure right-click is enabled. Note: The option might be called “Secondary click” because on some mice the contextual menus can be popped up with any button on the mouse, not just the right mouse button.
- If you’re using an Apple trackpad, click Trackpad settings and under Point & Click, set up the Secondary Click option for how you want the menus to pop up (two-finger tap, tap bottom left corner, or tap bottom right corner).
- If you’re using a stylus (such as on a Wacom tablet), use the tablet’s own settings software to make sure secondary click is enabled for the button of your choice on the stylus or tablet.
If any of those fixes it, that means the problem was not related to Photoshop specifically; the problem was that secondary click had not yet been turned on in macOS (system-wide).
