'SAVE A COPY' for JPG is SUPER ANNOYING!!

After Apple broke this with a change to their API, Adobe came up with a workaround in 22.4.2.

A few underlying facts that need to be clear:

• the ability to save directly to jpeg was a hack, introduced in Photoshop CS5 in 2010. Before that, it was not possible at all to save to a format that didn't support the full current state of the file. There wasn't even Save A Copy. You had to flatten, convert to 8 bits etc first. Everybody seems to have forgotten how it used to be before CS5.
• recent versions of MacOS removed the APIs that Photoshop used to save. These APIs were what allowed this direct save hack. Without them, it's not possible.
• jpeg can never, under any circumstances, be a default in Photoshop. Jpeg is a very limited file format that does not support layers, 16 bit depth, alpha channels or transparency. In other words, almost anything you can do to a file in Photoshop will render jpeg off-limits.
• the "legacy save as" option doesn't really revert to the old way. It's a workaround that Adobe eventually came up with, that mimics the old behavior. An important difference is that this time, there is a real risk of unintentional overwriting of original data. For this reason it can't be a default setting.
• no other software on the planet has ever been able to save directly to jpeg from 16 bit/layered/etc files. The "competition" can't do it. Affinity can't do it. You have to launch a separate and slow Export process. Only Photoshop could ever do this, and I bet they regret it now.

You can change that behavior back in the preferences, as long as you don't have a certain Mac computer. Apple changed their OS that made this necessary.
