Save as to Original folder, isn't working in PS 2024

Does anyone know why? It must only be me, since I can't find other complaints.  It didn't work in 2023 for me either, so I have been using 2022 version.  Now I'm trying to give 2024 a chance. I have the box checked off  'save as to original folder'.  I have already tried to uncheck it and test it and then recheck it and still doesn't happen.  I have been working in the same folder all morning.  I updated the apps, then reopened the images and it is trying to save them to a folder on a different external drive that I accessed days ago.  I used to think it was because I was opening the images from Lightroom into PS and I just put up with it and therefor used 2022, but these I am opening from Bridge 2024 into PS 2024.

I didn't have this issue in the 2021 version nor the 2022 version.

I am running Bridge and Photoshop 2024 not Lightroom, I recently started having the same issue. I am running an iMac on Somoma. After hours of resetting preferences, , wiping out all PS files and installation, reinstalling, restarting both the Mac and PS many times, trying every fix I could find; I finally reset Camera Raw settings to "open" instead of having it set to open as Smart Object. I went back and opened a few files as Smart Objects and each time the Save went to weird/random locations. If I opened it without Smart Object settings it saved where it is originally located.

There are only two places it can go:

  • the folder where it came from
  • the folder you last saved to

and this is determined by your Preference setting.

What's special with a smart object is that it's a new file. The embedded smart object has an original folder, but the master file, the container as it were, is a newly created file that doesn't have an original folder. You'll notice the file name gets an -1 suffix, and the original file name in brackets.

Semantics, you might say, and you may be right. When I do this here, it saves to the last folder I saved to.

I don't have a problem with this as long as it's consistent. If you think this is the wrong behavior and it shouldn't do this, that's a legitimate opinion. You can post this as a feature request under "Ideas".

But don't say it's random, because it's not.

So with saving and it wanting to save to Documents and me cancelling that action, then trying again a few minutes later and it trying to save to my pictures or desktop is not random? There was nothing saved between those two times. I used the same steps each time and got different results.

I have never saved to My Documents or to Pictures, so it was not picking up on a previous way of saved.

We will have to agree to disagree because I am the one that was sitting here seeing the results when I clicked save. I didn't even click into the layer panel between attempts at saving.

This might help someone (or not, but I'll try anyway).

I was not using "Save As..." prompt but "Export as PNG..." and having this exact issue either way.

I solved it by going to "Preferences > Export..." and checking the "Export assets to the location of the current document" box. That's it.

No it is not just you - and it is a real pain.  Thre only way to find your file is to re-open it and reveal in exporer. Then move it.

Exactlythe same problem, and preferences are set  to "original folder"

Hi Kevin, I read that entire post and it doesn't answer or solve my issue.  I now have 2 similar issues.  For a decade I have been opening an image in LR, editing it in LR, then clicking to edit it in PS. I edit it in PS then click 'Save As' so I can name it, since I don't want IMG-5053-edit-psd.  PS always reverted to the original folder so I could rename it.  ALWAYS.  The past few series of PS and Br haven't been doing that.  I now have to scroll through my external drive and internal drives to return to the folder the image came from in order to save that edited image and give it a name.  Why do I need to check the box next to Save As to original folder if it isn't going to work?

2nd issue which is with PS 2024 latest update as of Nov 14. If I click on a PSD file/image in BR 2024 and open in PS 2024 and click save as since I resized it for web or print, it doesn't revert to the folder it came from. It reverts to an external drive I haven't accessed in weeks. Why???

Sounds like a corrupt preferences file.

Before you reset preferences remember to save out actions and so on that you want to keep.
