Save As to Original Location with Smart Object

New Here ,
Sep 11, 2024 Sep 11, 2024

Currently, if I open a raw image from the file system (or Bridge) into ACR, and then choose Open as Object into PS, then choose Save As, I cannot save the file to the original location without hunting through my filesystem.

Here are the specific steps:

  1. Right-click on file in the file system and choose Open with > Photoshop. The file opens in ACR.
  2. Make any necessary edits, then choose Open as Object to open the file as a Smart Object in PS.
  3. Make any necessary edits, then choose Save As. The Save As window defaults to showing the last saved location, NOT the original file location.

Expected Result - Save As defaults to original file location

Actual Result - Save As defaults to last used save location

The result is the same if I open the image from Bridge.

If I instead choose to "Open" instead of "Open as Object" into PS, and then choose Save As, the default location to save my work is the original file location. I would expect the behavior to be the same for both options, but currently that is not the way it works.

I've reset all preferences, tried on several machines, and even got a new computer and did a fresh install of PS. The problem persists.

I am having the same issue with Sonoma and PS. If I open as smart object it will save to random locations not to the otiginal folder. As a work around I am opening the file from Camera Raw then converting to Smart object after it opens in PS, then it will save to it's original location.
I didn't have this issue until I had my iMac in to be fixed and had to reinstall Sonoma and all the software. I am running all the same versions of Bridge and PS as I was before the repair.
