Question

Saved as a PSD, but all layers have gone. Why?

I saved my document as a PSD as I was told that PSDs save layers. However the layers weren't there when I reopened it. And I need them back.

1. How do I get them back?

And 2. Why did they disappear in the first place?

There was no tick box for saving layers when I clicked 'Save As'.

Also, I have since closed Photoshop.

Can anyone help, please?

If the "Layers" checkbox in save as dialog was inactive, it means that at the time of saving there was only one background layer in the document (you could accidentally merge layers before saving).

What exactly did you do with the document before you save it? You will not be able to return the layers from merged document, but you can analyze your actions so that this does not happen again.

Thank you for responding.

I edited the photos, then went to Save As > Save to Computer > Change format to PSD > Save.

There wasn't even a checkbox for layers available, active or inactive, it just wasn't there.

Any ideas?

In the new dialog box, there really is no checkmark "Layers", but if they were in the document at the time of saving, they would be saved.

After saving, did you open the file on the same computer and in the same version of Photoshop?

Can you repeat your actions on another file and see the result? If possible, send screenshots of the layers palette before saving and a screenshot of the layers palette after saving.
