Before the 2024 updates when ever I open a file from Lightroom Classic into Photoshop, do some work and then save the image, it automatically saved in the place where it came from. Since the 2024 updates, it defaults to wherever I last saved something.
Let's say I open a photo, do some retouching and click ctrl+S, instead of saving in that same folder, it now saves in a design folder from a project I had open to add some texture to a flat design. I cannot find anything in preferences to revert to the old behavior, and this way seems counterintuitive.
If this is a new "feature" can we at least have the option to return to legacy, save to original directory? If I am missing something that already exists, I'd appreciate a headsup on how to fix my problem.

This isn't a "new feature" of Photoshop. I don't see this on my machine.
In a first step try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps described here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#reset-preferences
Please backup your settings before resetting the preferences. You can check:

This is a checkbox in Preferences. If that checkbox doesn't do what it should, it's time for a reset as per AxelMatts description.
