Question

Saving as PSB document

Hello Forum.

I'm currently converting some of my layers in Photoshop into smart object. Then when I double click another document opens up, and I see it's a .psb file extention. My question is, would it be safe to just save the psb file, and delete the PSD file itself since all the layers I need are within my smart object which is a psb file? Or do I need to keep both ( Rename the psb and make PSD native file). The reason I am doing this is to delete all the unnecessary layers I dont need. So Just my smart object contains all the required layers I need.

PS: I know it's a large format file psb, but Im not sending it for print or to anyone.

Thank you.

When you create Smart object from layers if you open the Smart Object Layer's  object Photoshop will create a work doument for you to work on. It will be a temp PSB file, If you change the work document and commit the changes with a save or close and save Photoshop will update the smart object layer's object.  Not all smart object layers are create that way other smart object layers object may be other file types. Some will not even open in Photoshop they will open is other software like Plug-in and applications for example ACR and AI.

You can delete the original psd file if you want. You are correct, everything is inside of the smart object and shows up in the .psb.
