Question

Scans of slides, how to convert to individual images

I have an Epson V700 scanner to scan colour slides in mounts. The automatic cropping function crops too tightly so I scan the whole set, so all the slides are scanned to one large file. I can use guides in photoshop and create (and save) multiple marquees, each covering a single frame. But how can I get from this point to extracting every slide to its own file? The slide edges are not adjacent so there are margins between the individual slide images. The slide holder is in exacly the same place for every scan so I can reuse whatever I create.

@Rusty Pixels

There are scripts to divide an image to separate layers based on guides, and other scripts to save layers to separate files.

Edit: Here is the link to the script to split based on guides:

P.S. It is also possible to automate the removal of the smaller, unwanted image "gap" layers between each true frame which would be created by the script, however a sample image would be required, or at least the pixel value known for the width of the image frame vs. the gaps so that this could be scripted.

The script to save layers to files comes with Photoshop and can be found under File > Export > Layers to Files

That's great - got it working. I use an action after the export to crop the images to a 35mm frame as they export is the full scanner dimensions.

Glad to hear it worked! Would it be possible to share a copy of the original scan, with the guides? It could be half size and or have image content redacted for privacy. I'm more interested in the automation process than the actual content.

Yes, you'll need an align and transparency trim or something in there to have the frames normalised to produce separate images.
