Question

Scratch disk error even with freed up space and using an external hard drive

Hi! I need help, I'm unable to edit any of my photoshop files even though I freed up nearl 100GB on my Mac and selected an external hard drive for my scratch disk on photoshop. I keep getting the scratch disk error whenever I click on my designs.

I would not use an external drive for scratch. It is prone to error due to connection and timing issues.

Try using your external drive for archive storage of lesser used files and keep scratch and the currently used image files on your internal drive.

I use a USB-C SSD plugged into my Thunderbolt display for scratch and it works great, much better than the spinning disks that I previously had. My Mac has the 256GB internal drive (got it as a refurb, yes I'd rather have a lot bigger drive.)

OP, clear more space on your internal drive. Using multiple drives for scratch space is fine. And yes post a screenshot of the scratch disk settings.

It can work - yes (as you have proved) , but depending on the connection, including where it is physically - for example close to the front side on a laptop close to the keyboard, it can be prone to being knocked and disturbed. At that point the scratch file can be corrupted leading to issues. It sounds like yours is physically fine and safe though 🙂

Yeah I've always been careful about accidentally unplugging drives. Been there done that LOL.

Post a screenshot of Preferences > Scratch Disks.

(or is it called settings on Mac now?)
