Scrubby zoom not working

Hi, I'm using the latest version of CC on my iMac and scrubby zoom has stopped working.  I've read posts about this OpenGL thing but I don't have any option anywhere to either switch it on or off. I'm no tech wizard so forgive me if this is something simple that I'm missing. I desperately need this zoom to work. Thanks in advance.

I updated Photoshop this morning to 23.5 on Windows 10 and I have the same issue - scrubby zoom and all hardware acceleration features (like smooth panning) not working, even though "Use graphics processor" is checked under Preferences > Performance and the graphics adapter is detected as AMD Radeon R9 200 Series.

I tried all recommended fixes like enabling/disabling graphics processor and restarting PS, resetting preferences files, loading PS without optional plugins. Nothing worked.

In the end, I just reverted back to 23.4.2 and scrubby zoom is back! So the problem is for sure with the 23.5 update that breaks the feature, possibly by no longer recognizing my graphics card as "capable" for graphics acceleration, all while not actually disabling graphics acceleration in Preferences.

My graphics card, although old, is still capable of playing recent games, even though AMD no longer provides driver updates for it. I don't want to spend $1k on a new card only to get scrubby zoom to work in PS. Adobe please fix it.

I just reinstalled 23.5 a second time and the Help > GPU Compatibility check shows same info exactly (screenshot below), but scrubby zoom doesn't work. Reverted to 23.4.2 a second and it works again.

I borrowed and installed a new video card from a friend and updated Photoshop to 23.5 again. The scrubby zoom works now with the new video cards and drivers. So the problem lies definitely with the way the new update recognizes older video cards or drivers.

But as I said before, we shouldn't have to upgrade the video card to keep using basic features like scrubby zoom and smooth panning, features that have been working fine for forever, and still would.

Hi, the team has to change the way Photoshop interacts with the GPU due to changes in the operating system. (in short, OpenGL and OpenCL are deprecated)

In order to keep the old code, you might want to check "Deactivate Native Canvas" in the menu Edit/Preferences/Technology preview (Pc) or Photoshop/Preferences/Technology preview (Mac), then restart Photoshop.

Also, according to the GPU FAQ, ( https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cc-gpu-card-faq.html ) you might want to have a graphic card that scores more than 2000 in the PassMark's GPU Computer Benchmark Chart.

The problem is maybe that the videocards had optimized code for OpenGL rather than DirectX, and therefore migth not be supported for some functions. As time goes by, the programs are coded to rely even more on the GPU, the CPU power is plateauing, so it might be a good choice in the future to invest in a GPU with more VRAM or Power than for the top of the class CPU.

Hi,

I have the same problem - "scrubby zoom" is greyed out. Photosop 23.5.0 Windows 10

I have tried every fix I have read; deleting preferences, trying every permutation of GPU settings, driver is up to date. Nothing works.

Irritating, to sway the very least.

Hi, I’ve been reading all the comments regarding “Scrubby Zoom” and “Panning” in PS, and the problems people are having (including me) since the latest version 23.5.  I think we all are getting a little bogged down with the technicalities here.  The bottom line is “Scrubby Zoom” and” Panning” are not working for a lot of people in version 23.5.  I have just installed the very latest version of PS 23.5.1 (15.09.2022), exactly the same problem.  I went to help “GPU Compatibility” and it was showing all ticks and said “Your graphics processor is compatible” I know my graphics card isn’t all singing and dancing but I use lots of software (not games) which needs a graphics card and not on board graphics and I don’t have any issues at all.  Surely this must be an ADOBE issue that needs sorting, it’s not up to me to experiment with a new and more expensive card only to find I’m still having the same problem…. that’s not on. Come on ADOBE sort this out or you will lose a customer and possibly a lot more.

Hi, I keep getting notified to upgrade to the latest PS.  Has anyone solved the problem or had any information from ADOBE regarding the "Scrubby Zoom" and "Panning" problem ? I tried version 23.5.1 with the same issues.  The latest version says my graphics card is compatible, so why doesn't it work?

Nobody can solve the problem, since it's an Adobe problem and they digging their head in the sand about it. Their "solution" is to upgrade your video card. Better spend ur money on a new video card to get scrubby zoom back than on a vacation down south, right?

Hi, I have been in touch with ADOBE and they came up with a solution to our problem (to be fair they were very helpful).

Follow these instructions in the latest version of PS. This worked for me using Windows 10, I'm not sure if this would work for any other windows version or Mac's.

  1. In Photoshop, go to edit> preferences> technological previews> check “deactivate native canvas”
  2. From the same preferences> click on performance> and check/uncheck “multithread compositing”
  3. Re launch Photoshop and test.

Hope this solves your problem.....best of luck!

Regards Furness

Wait, are you saying that there is a solution that doesn't require buying a new video card? Are you sure??

Because that's what ALL the "professionals" here said to do to "solve" this issue. Don't they know best??

They must know best since they locked all the threads where I suggested buying a new video card is not the solution.

Anyway, it would be good to know if anyone is still on pre-23.5, if the preferences settings mentioned here by @FURNESS  are new to 23.5 or if they existed in older versions also.

I am using a new card now so I can't check or confirm the fix without plugging in the old one and reinstalling all the old drivers.

Hi, Go to Adobe web site and go onto live chat. A robot will ask you some silly questions but navigate to a helper and type in your problem, like(trouble with latest ver of PS). You will need to have certain information at hand, like (which ver of PS are you using that works. What OS you are you using and is it right upto dat etc). You will have to be patient! Oddly they didn't ask me about my graphics card. I assume you went to help in PS and checked GPU compatibility to see if your GPU is compatible?

Good luck
