Select and delete is deleting more than is selected! - Photoshop

When I select a background - backlit silhouette - and delete it, more areas outside of the marching ants are deleted. They look like they are less than 100% transparent but really making cutting out backgrounds impossible! Here's a screenshot. Anyone ever encounter this?

Hi there,
Something does not look right here, could you share a screenshot of the full Photoshop interface with Layers panel visible?
Does it happen with all files or only this file?
Also, what version of Photoshop and the operating system are you using?
You may try enabling "Legacy compositing" located in Photoshop's Preferences > Performance, then relaunch Photoshop and let us know if it helps?
Regards,
Sahil

Which tool are you using to select your background?
What is the tolerance value?

How did you make your selection, is there any feather on it? The marching ants position represents the 50% point in a transition that can go from o to 100%.
