Select and Mask Bug

Ever since I updated to the latest version of photoshop, the select and mask tool is giving me weird results. It is recognizing the subject in the photo, but it is recognizing it in the wrong location. Its as if it is selecting where the subject was before the image was moved to a different spot on the canvas. Photos attached.

I can’t open that zip. But for now a simple screenshot of the Layers panel would be enough.

Do you have the chain symbol between the layer thumbnail and the mask thumbnail? If it’s there, the image and the mask will move together. If you click it, the coupling breaks, and you can move the image and mask independently.

If you do have the chain icon in place, but the mask and image still move independently, that probably means corrupt preferences and a reset should fix it. Make sure to save out your actions and brushes to .atn and .abr files first so they can be reloaded, they will be wiped.

Still sounds like corrupt preferences.

The safest and most complete method is to move the whole "Adobe Photoshop 2026  Settings"-folder to the desktop, so a fresh one can be built on next launch.

Hi @sharp_genius5D1E, thanks so much for reaching out!
Could you let us know the exact version of Photoshop you’re using? Also, please make sure the tool is being applied to the correct layer. If the issue continues, it would be really helpful if you could share a screen recording that shows the full Photoshop window and panels.
Thanks a lot!
Alek
