Selecting Layers

New Here ,

How do I turn off the auto-select feature? Usually, when I want to select a layer, I right click and choose it, now all of a sudden, when I left click on anything, it selects it and won't remove the selection box until I click another area. You can see below it put's a box around the layer, I dont want that

Look at the move tool options, however I would expect the contextual right click layer selection to still work.

When you have the Move tool selected, the options bar at the top includes "Auto-Select" and "Show Transform Controls" as settings which can be checked/unchecked. They are checked by default, simply uncheck to remove these two behaviors.

Auto Select is possibly Photoshop's most annoying function, and definitely best turned off.

It's still useful when you need it though, and it can be temporarily re-enabled by holding down the Ctrl/Cmd key with the Move tool selected.
