When cropping, I know that you can select Classic via the cog or by pressing <p>. But how do I set Classic as the default, so I don't have to re-select it every time?

Select the crop tool, then click the gear icon in the options bar, and check "Use Classic Mode"

I do that, and it may stick for a few photos, but then it reverts to the New mode again. I need a way to make the default permanent - Or should that be enough and my system is misbehaving?

Hi Chana. Not sure I understand what you mean by resetting the preference. I am trying to set Crop to use Classic mode all the time. I have attempted to do this by accessing the cog-icon and clicking the Classic box but next time I start PS, or even in the same session, it reverts to the new method - The preference is ignored. So I am wondering if there is a more permanent fix.

No I haven't - And yes, it is.
I have tried running as Admin, then setting the preference but it makes no difference.

Hey @Galeodan! Have you tried resetting your preferences yet? Manually restoring your preferences is a thorough way to reset Photoshop to its default state and ensure any problematic plug-in preferences or user presets aren't loaded. You can find out how to do that here: https://adobe.ly/4gvEQo5

After that, restart the app and try selecting the Classic Crop Tool again. On my end, it stays as the default tool even after I close and reopen Photoshop. Let me know if this works for you!
