Simple issue but it's been driving me a bit insane. When I take an image in Photoshop and try to apply the Sharpen or Sharpen More or even Smart Sharpen filter, it doesn't show on the image; it's like the image doesn't change at all. If I go to the layers, tab, it even shows that there's a filter on the image, the image just doesn't show it. Further more, if I click the home button to where I can see all of my projects, the sharpen shows on the image. This annoys me a bit because I also can't export it as sharp as I wish it to be. Any help would be greatly appreaciated, thanks!

Could you please post screenshots taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible (pre- and post-sharpening)?
Sharpen and Sharpen More do not seem recommendable, you may want to try Unsharp Mask.

This is what the projects look like when I click the home button
Yet this is what they look like when I actually open the project. Nothing happens when I sharpen them inside of the project but the sharpening shows when I click the home button to look at all my projects. Additionally, the sharpening doesn't show when I export the files.

From my testing Sharpen is obvious on second apply while Sharpen More and Smart Sharpen are immidiatelly visible. If you go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen and turn on Preview you should see changes in real time.
One more thing: do you have layer with image selected before using sharpening filters? If you have layered file and you want to sharpen content on multiple layers then put all layers in the same Smart Object or create stamped image then use filters.
By the way, it is recommended to use ACR filter to sharpen because sharpening filters in Photoshop are old ones.
If you can not manage thing to work try with preference reset https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Again: Could you please post screenshots taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible (pre- and post-sharpening)?
And the edited Smart Object should be visible in the Layers Panel.

Hi this is a year old, but since the same thing happened to me I"d like to share my solution.
I had the same problem --- changes just the way I wanted in 'smart sharpen' but would not show in the main image after applying.
My solution was that I took the layer/image in question and opened it in a new file. Then I made the changes and it worked fine. So then I linked it from the original file.
Don't know why it would not work in the original. I kept trying to see if someting in the file was affecting it. Anyway, my preceding paragraph doe sovle it or at least work around it.
