Hello all,

I am very new in Photoshop and editing photographs after film processing and printing for long years.

I intended to sharpen my photograph, whenever I go to filter>sharpen>unsharp mask (or smart sharpen) ı receive "Could not complete the Unsharp Mask command because the selected area is empty" How can I select and what shall I do? Thank you for your help beforehand. Sevki Ümit

Hi

First, go to Select > Deselect (Cmd+D) to remove the selection you have.

If you make a Smart Object first, the sharpening will be non-destructive and can be edited or removed. Here is the Help page:

Go on Youtube and look up "Frequency Separation Sharpening." Its quite a bit better than Unsharp Mask.

To add what Jane said, make sure you'e also on a layer that can be sharpened like a pixel layer or smart object.

Dear Jane,

Thank you very much for your reply.  I am still unable  to sharpen my photograph. I will have some questions for you in near future and expect your replies. In the meantime pls note that I have been watching Adobe Photoshop tutorials.

Kind regards

Hi şevki_ümit,

Can you post a screenshot of your Layers panel? Resize it taller and wider so we can see all of it.

Also, please open your History panel from the Window menu. It records the last 50 steps by default, but is cleared when the file is closed. Does it list USM or Smart Sharpen?
