I bought my Macbook pro in Feb 2024.
I was so happy i managed to buy this monster and have been superhappy until a week agoo.

Its a M3 Macbook Pro with 128GB ram.

I work a alot in Photoshop and ever since Artboards where introduced i have been using them.
My work is often "Event Design" for huge events and consist of making social media banner sin every possible sizes and formats. And one of the most time consuming is making "Artist Banners".

When Artboards came to life that was a real time saver for me, i didnt have to save every artist banner in 3 different format in 4 different files.. Now i could have them all in one place and easily export to PNG to give to the promotors.

here is an example of my File/Canas with alot of Artboards.

artboards.png

Each and every Artboard have about 70-120 Layers, Yes i know its a lot especially as that Canvas is then huge. But again.. i have a 128GB ram computer and this file is from June 2024 and it worked and runed so smooth. Im not used to this kind of monstercomputer so in my head i should Rasterize alot of layers into one.. But again.. With this computer it didnt even lag a bit. And i have worked on evenbigger artboards with over 20 artists without a single Lag. - Again, i LOVED this computer. 😄

But now all of a sudden it has gotten realy bad. I can open the files fast but as soon as i  start editing even if its just moving a font or a Artist Logo a pixel or two its laggy as ******

Again, this particular file i show above was super smooth to work with in June and it was like working on a Single artboard 800x800px (72dpi) with 4 layers. So smoth.

I started noticing this lagging abouttwo weeks agoo and it has gotten worse and worse every day, i have updated Photoshop to the latest version (2024), even tried the 2025 version with no luck.  Then this monday i updated OSX to the latest version and i dont know but it feels like it has gotten even worse.

here is my settings in Performance, Can anyone tell me if im way of here with these settings or?

RAM USE: 85% (108GB)
Hostory States: 78
Cache Levels: 4
Cache Tile Size: 128K

This particular file i have as an example is made up of 36 Artboards (70-120 Layers)
18 Artboards are 1080x1080px (72dpi)

18 Artboards are 1080x1920px (72dpi)

The layers themselves are not super high quality and not particular heavy. And once again, i understand it a super heavy file. It runned smooth as butter just 3 weeks agoo.

I have tried to Purge cache but no luck.

Now it is so bad laggy with another file im working on its not even possible to work. Just moving a layer 2 pixels left gives me thatspinning circle for up to 2-5 minutes, Very random. But all in all SuperLaggy.

I dont know what to do, my next option is to reinstall but on a mac that dosnt do as much as on a PC if im not mistaken.

Could it be some hardware error? Or is it just the updates from both Adobe and OSX thats giving me this?

I can inform that no other issues are noticeable.  Meaning everything else is running smoothly. Im using Ableton and After Effects with no problem at all.

I just did a test, and dublicating one of the Artboards and this seem to be one of those tings where i hve to wait at least 2-3 inutes fo it to finish.

CPU% goes up a bit yes but CPU load is nothing.

yes ive tried to create a new file and rastireze the background and alot of layers and yes that helps but again i have tried files ive worked on without any issues  the last 6 moths and their all now all of a sudden really Laggy.

Any idea? Anyone?

...but in the meantime, do you have enough scratch disk space? I see you have no less than 78 history states, which means a lot of data that needs to be stored somewhere.

Also, I'd dial down that 85% memory allocation considerably. A special thing with Apple silicon is that the GPU uses shared system memory. The GPU can use a lot, in principle whatever is available. This can potentially compete with Photoshop's memory allocation.

In normal scenarios, there is no such thing as "enough RAM" with Photoshop. The total memory requirement will usually exceed whatever you may have installed with good margin. So a scratch file is always written, and it contains all history states for all open documents. Each history state can potentially add the full nominal file size.
