Smart Guide snapping not working (PS 23.4.2)

I'm using Photoshop 23.4.2 on MacOS 12.4 and I can't seem to get Smart Guides working properly. Layers do snap on the same level vertically but when I try to place images side by side with consistant distance to one another, Photoshop won't snap the 3rd image in place with the same margin than 1st and 2nd image has.

So we're talking about very basic Photoshop feature here. Adobe's article on Smart Guides (https://helpx.adobe.com/fi/photoshop/how-to/align-space-objects.html) is not helpful at all since those features do not appear on my device.

Any ideas/workarounds on how to get the snap working again?
