Smart liquify mesh changes after editing the smart object in PS 2022

Hi! I'm working on images that need some liquifying as the final step before the final colour treatment goes on. Unfortunately, opening these smart objects to make revisions after I've done the initial liquify causes the liquify mesh to go out of whack and get applied to different areas of the image. Opening and re-cropping the smart object doesn't put it in the right place, it makes it worse and shifts the positioning of the entire smart object.

To set up the smart object I duplicate the background layer so I have a layer to compare the retouched version with the original, then select all my retouch layers with the background copy and create a smart object. I then use the liquify tool on this to smooth out bumps in the garments in the image. When I have to revise parts of the image that are in the smart object, opening the smart object, changing something, and saving it changes the appearance of the liquify mask, rendering the liquify useless. It's really quite a pain in the neck.

To get around it so far, I've been making a stamped layer, converting it to a smart object, and liquifying that - basically a way of saving the mesh that I can copy and reapply to new versions. This is because saving the mesh from the first liquify and replacing it on the updated smart object produces the same result.

I've attached pictures of the initial liquify on the smob and how it looks after making changes to the smob and saving. (Please excuse the mutilated pillow, this is prior to fixing its excessive smudging)
