smart object cant be opened... file is either locked or in use

In a psd file, i have a smart object that was created in illustrator, i save the file and all is well. But, when ever i double click the Photoshop layer that contains the smart object i get the following dialogue box. How can i fix this?

Thanks but my issue dont seem to be relevant. The smart object is the one that is contained in the psd layer and when double clicked it cannot be opened in illu 😞
