Question

Smart object created in Illustrator will only open in Photoshop

I created a vector in Illustrator, pasted as a smart object in Photoshop. Also right clicked and chose convert to smart object as well as added it to my library.  When double clicking the thumbnail in hopes to open in Illustrator to edit, it opens in Photoshop instead.  Again, the vector was originally created in Illustrator, so it should open in that program.

You pasted it into PS, created the smart object in PS and then added it to your library? It's a PS file. If you open the vector in Illustrator, drag that into your library, it's an Illustrator file. I would have to see the file...

I copied an image from Illustrator, pasted it in Photoshop as a Smart Object.  When I double clicked to open in Illustrator to modify it, it opens in a seperate Photoshop tab rather than in Illustrator.  My understanding is that because it is a vector smart object, it should open in the program it was created.

I see - pasted as a smart object into PS but then you said you also right clicked to make it a smart object in PS... After pasting the first time it's should open in Illustrator but if it's wrapped up in a Photoshop smart object, it will open in Photoshop - you should then see the original smart object and that one should open in Illustrator - so just double click again.  Nested smart objects can get a little crazy. I just tested it and it does indeed work the way I described. The screenshot is right after I pasted in from Illustrator.
