Smart Object Stupidity

Okay, so...

If you save a PNG/JPG etc as a smart object it saves it in a temporary spot. When you close Photoshop and come back it's there.

If you open that same PNG/JPG from the same temp folder and save it as a PSD in the same folder. Then when you close Photoshop and come back everything is erased.

Additionally, I can't find the origins of any past smart objects for any PNG/JPG images in other comps, but they're not missing unlike PSDs...So where [cursing removed by moderator] are they and why are they not missing/deleted like PSDs?

This is just stupid. So what are people expected to to do to manage smart object data as I can't trust Photoshop to just store it without deleting it?

I have no idea what you are doing - your explanation makes no sense. You can't have a smart object in a png/jpg - they are flat files. Smart objects can only exist inside of PSD files. So - can you please list your steps and issue again? Is your PSD missing it's smart object? Was it linked instead of embedded and you moved it on your hard drive? How did you make the smart object - by adding an image into a psd or by combining layers?

It's not stupid, you just don't understand what you're doing or how smart objects work.

If what you want is to reference an actual file, use Linked Smart Objects instead of Embedded.
