Question

Smart object to keep it's previous canvas size

Hi everyone,

So I created some psd's all the same canvas size. All with different graphics and stuff.

So I then create another PSD and bring in the previous psd's as smart objects.

But is it possible to import the smart objects and keep their canvas size rather than Photoshop using what areas have graphics in them. (When I push move tool it shows the canvas size)

The reason why is I want to highlight them and bottom justify and for all the smart objects to line up.

I have already tried putting a border around the smart objects but then that will show up in the end.

Let me start again. If you have a new photoshop canvas page open.

File -->> place linked and select the PSD to be linked in the canvas

Example fig 1. I have a blue circle, when it first gets linked into the canvas the blue circle is at the bottom of the canvas with white space above. The transformation control box shows this white space above.

But once I select the tick box and then the select tool the transformation control box will then shrink down only to show me what pixels are being used (fig 2)

If I then try to align two linked smart objects it will align based not on the canvas size of the original PSD but rather the what pixels are being used on.

Does that make more sense?

Did you try my suggestion?

Go to File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack.

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier.  Yes, I tried it and it is very interesting b/c it will import the "empty space" and I get what I am after except it is not a smart object. I think your idea will be the backup plan if I can't find anything else. Thank you very much. I have learnt another thing about photoshop.

Can you post screenshots to illustrate?

If the linked files are larger in pixel size than the canvas that you are placing on, then they will be resized if your Preferences > General > Resize Image During Place is checked/active.

Are you using layers masks?

Did you place the images into a frame drawn with the frame tool?

I didn't know about the frame tool. Wow that's great. I've got a project that I can use that in. Thank you very much.

It might help to Show Guides and/or Grids and turn on the Snap to Grid feature.  You can customize Grid size in Preferences > Guides, Grids...

  1. Go to File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack.  That will put each PSD on it's own layer.
  2. Open Layers Panel and use shift + click to select all.
  3. Go to Layer menu and distribute & align as needed.

Hope that helps.
