smart objects get replaced with new ones

sorry, Cory--I meant that trashing Preferences fixed a problem I've had with brushes, but I shouldn't have mentioned that in this thread. My issue with smart objects becoming unlinked has happened a couple more times since I wrote. I tried a couple of things:  The most recent time, just now, I tried the menu item Layer>Smart Objects> Update all modified contents on the smart object layer, and I got an alert saying "could not update smart object because of a program error." Then I tried just saving everything and closing and reopening the file, because someone had suggested that maybe the problem would resolve itself that way. But it didn't. Next time I will try the "Relink to File" command, and if that works, it will be fine but I still wish I could know what is causing this.

Thank you for your sysinfo @Paul-ny, you mention that resetting preferences and freeing up HD space worked... not clear on WHAT worked for what issue?  Want to make sure we understand where things are NOW?  Happy to keep trying things if you are still having the OG issue, or if there is a new one.

Thank you, Cory.  I think I had a Photoshop auto-upgrade since the problem last occurred, so the information might be irrelevant. Also I took 100 GB off my hard drive, which had been very short on space. I think that lack of storage may have been the cause of another problem that cropped up, not for the first time, where my brushes fail to take on the texture they should. and I think several other attributes, but just keep those settings the same no matter what brush I choose. Deleting preferences fixed that problem. Here is the System info:

To Joseph Levine: I'm happy to try to be clearer. I don't think screen captures would help.

Let's say I'm creating an illustration in Photoshop, called Picture.psd, it has a lot of layers. I paste in imagery to a new layer that I will want to adjust and I don't want it to degrade, so I turn that layer into a smart object with the Layers>Smart Objects>Create Smart Object command.  When I double click on the Smart Object icon in the Layers palette, a new window opens, it has the name (say) Layer 10.psb.  I do some adjusting in that window, add some layers, erase some image; as soon as I click Save for  Layer10.psb, I see the changes I made appear in the window for Picture.psd.  I go back to Layer 10.psb and make more changes, click Save and watch those changes show up in the psd file. This is all normal and as it should be.

My issue is this: occasionally I will make changes in the psb file, click Save, and Picture.psd does not change. I have been making changes already and seeing the changes show up in the psd file, but this time they don't.  I make another change or two, try saving a few more times, and still no change in Picture.psd. When I double click on the Smart Objects icon in the Layers palette of Picture.psd, instead of focus shifting to the open window of Layer 10.psb, a new window opens, titled Layer 11.psb. The contents of this window are the same as what Layer 10.psb was before I made those changes that didn't register in the psd file. So now Layer 11 is linked as a smart object in Picture.psd and Layer 10.psb is obsolete but still there, open on my desktop.

That is what I'm writing about. Is that clear? I hope I didn't make any serious typos this time!

I am not 100% sure what you are asking, and we've all had editing-challenged days.

Perhaps you could write a short description on what is precisely happening and even share a few screen captures.

My first reply to my post was supposed to say "I don't know how to edit my post, but I meant to write "and watching the changes appear in the parent PSD file as I save them in the PSB smart object".
