*Some* Filter Gallery effects turn image full black

I wanted to add the filter Graphic Pen from the filter gallery, but when I selected it the whole image turned to black. I have my project set to GPU and the image is in 8 bits RGB

    @Nowah5FBD change your foreground and background colours to the default by pressing D on the keyboard, your background colour is set to black

      Work backwards through your history panel to where the image looks OK, and show us another screen shot at that state.  What is the layer you are working on?
