“All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost;

The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost.”

— J.R.R. Tolkien

Hi

This week we leave the blistering heat of Dave’s Desert for a cool October day in Vermont where I encountered these trees with their lovely roots while hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

The scene is set — how will you now use it?

You are really developing your painting, Dean.

The one in the centre also seems overwhelmed.

Aw, Euan, eat pie and celebrate anyway! NASA has ideas, and a pasty is a pie.

Haha Leslie, I love this!

One thing I didn't say earlier is that my friend has been section hiking the AT for 30 years and she plans to finish this year with four more trips. Her Trail Name is "Bear Repellent" because she's never seen a bear while hiking. We're all hoping she sees one on her final leg in the Smokies this Fall.

                                                             From their own angles,
                                                           Visitors from near and far
                                                          See them in different ways,
The world meeting round the rocks
                                                     Embraced by the Vermont Roots.

Edit: Jane, am I right in believing that the mountain goats live in North America, close enough to see the Appalachian Trail in Vermont upside up, opposite to a lonely little kiwi from down under?

Jacob, the only reference I can find to a mountain goat in Vermont near the AT is an outfitter:

https://www.mountaingoat.com/

I can't find any reference to them living anywhere close to Vermont or the AT.

Jane,

So I remembered it in the right way, and the mountain goat are close enough to see the trail upside up, being on the same side of the earth, opposite to the kiwi from down under.

My images here were a follow up on the former discussion closed by Dean with this post (the piper and the climber being elswhere on the way all round the earth seeing the trail from corresponding different angles),

Your Tolkien quote reminded me of another that I really like and seems to fit the location.

My first thought after seeing your image - was that quote from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?
I did a web search and found it is from The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, written after Hitchhiker's.

Yes, a Dirk Gently novel. Much underrated. There was both a BBC and a Netflix production.

The scene said faerie glade to me, so to be fair, I tried to find mythical creatures from all our locations.  For the most part, and strangely enough, I found no actual photographs of these creatures, the exception being the most scary of them all, the Ecky Thumps from North Eastern England.  I just hope they don't give you all nightmares.

The Ecky Thumps are the scariest of all. Throw them a black pudding and run! 🙂
