There was some discussion in a previous SFTW thread of creating some challenges relating to specific world or national days. It turns out that today, Friday 17 February, is National Cabbage Day in the US. Who could resist a challenge like that? So we have our cabbage patch starter image, what will you do with it?
The “rules”:
* Use the starter image as at least part of your own image entry.
* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc
* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".
* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
* The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only. Sorry to emphasise this, but the image is not for use elsewhere.
To download the image below, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. I've made the background transparent to save you cutting it out. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).
When posting back your image – please use the blue reply button in this first post. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.
Have fun.
Dave

Lol! You know I never really noticed it Dean, but as with all great art, it's study that brings out the details 🙂

Beautifully done Dean, but you made us work for it. I can't see anything to do with Vincent without thinking of the best five minutes of Doctor Who ever.

Thanks for the compliment Trevor.
And thanks for sharing the Doctor Who video. I hadn't seen that one. Is a great 3.5 minutes. 🙂

Dean,
It was so well composed that I wondered at first sight whether there was a cabbage hidden in the original, then (thought I saw) its intricate blending into the original flower, unfortunately without the time to find and look at the original painting.

Thanks Jacob. I did think about where to put the cabbage flower. I did a few versions to get the style right and stand out. The orginal and source of the image was from the URL below:

Thanks, Dave! In America, when we hear the word “king,” some of us immediately think of Elvis first!

Serge Gainsbourg, a french very talended singer/songwriter was called "l'homme à la tête de chou" (cabbage head man).
Mixing these shows how accurate was his nickname…

In looking again at the starter image, the thought occured to me: shadows
It's the thing we most probably have to deal with when we are compositing Dave's elements
into our scenes.
It's not a new problem and I recently came across this interesting article:
I hope you enjoy it.

It's a good article Euan - and so true. Many a potentially good composite is let down by poor shadows or unmatched lighting.
The new SFTW will be up soon.

Dave seems to like to challenge us with shadows and perspectives, both of which I struggle with! He and others are happy to offer gentle guidance though, which is one of the wonderful side benefits of these "weekend" challenges.
