Something for the Weekend - Part 236 - Life of Pi!

Community Expert ,
Mar 14, 2025 Mar 14, 2025

Thanks to all who took part in our last rocky terrain challenge. It was great to see the different ideas and approaches to bring that scene to life.

I post this new challenge on March 14th which happens to be Pi day (3.14......). So I thought we should honour this remarkable number, which has been calculated to trillions of decimal places, by using its Greek symbol as a starting point. What can you make with it?

The “rules”:

  • Use the starter image as at least part of your own image entry.
  • Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright, etc.
  • Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum “regulars”.
  • There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off your skills, or bring a bit of humor and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
  • The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only.

To download the starter image, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser). The background is transparent so you don't even need to mask it.

When posting back your image — please use the blue reply button in this first post and use the 'Insert Photos' icon at the top of the reply box. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry, then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.

Have fun!

Dave

We just happened to have a couple of metal silhouettes in our garden representing Maisie our dog, and Joe our cat, so Dave's render fited in very nicely.

They'll be working out the area of the flower bed. That's a nice job matching the texture and lighting, Trevor.

Now that is lateral thinking, Trevor. Very clever.

The Pi poster can be downloaded here: http://unihedron.com/projects/pi/index.php

It shows the Pi symbol and the value of Pi in decimal, upon closer examination 350,390 digits are visible.

Making off:

I asked Firefly to generate a Stonehenge-like image by making the stones in the foreground Pi-shaped.
After generating nearly a hundred images without ever getting him to understand the shape of the Pi symbol, I chose one that suited me.
I cut out the arch in the foreground, isolated it on a new layer and deleted it from the background, using the Remove tool and Generative Fill.
Using the eraser (on a mask) and the Fluidity tool, I sculpted the square arch into a Pi shape and adjusted the floor.

I also used a bit of hue/saturation and changed the sky, as the original one wasn't pretty.

Not sure what this is Bob.  I can make out the sideways image of a person diving at the top, but the rest is too blurred.

I reached the age where we need a medical to keep our driving license last year (75) and wasn't taking any chances.  So I memorised the top three lines of the eye chart while attending a previous visit to the doctor, and used that info to find the same chart so I could memorise enough to pass.  When I went for the medical I found I could read all the way to the second from last line without memorising.  I left the surgery with my signed form, and went straight to get the new license.  On the way in I helped a _very_ old and infirm looking lady into the building, and was astonished when I discovered that she was also there to nenew her drving license!    When we left the building she got into her V8 Holden (Australian muscle car) and drifted out of the car park enveloped in clouds of white smoke.

I might have dreamed the last bit, but I just had time to get my phone out and grab this picture.

I like this bending of the symbol to create a new message and image, it works very well.

Reminds me of school dinners.  (I must have one heck of memory to remember that back that far!)

We have polital ho-haw going on here right now over the school dinner contract being given to a new company which under performed big time, and then went bust.  At one time it got so bad, they were shipping the meals across the Tasman.
