Something for the Weekend - Part 251 - Lemons and Limes!

Community Expert ,
Oct 10, 2025 Oct 10, 2025

Hi,
Thanks to all who submitted images in our previous album cover challenge. There were some great ideas and great covers.

This week we start with 4 simple fruit. You can use one or all of them in creating a new image. The only limit is your imagination, how far can you take it?

The “rules”:

  • Use the starter image as at least part of your own image entry.
  • Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright, etc.
  • Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum “regulars”.
  • The challenge is not limited to Photoshop. Any Adobe software can be used.
  • There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off your skills, or bring a bit of humor and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
  • The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only.

To download the starter image, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).

When posting back your image — please use the blue reply button in this first post and use the 'Insert Photos' icon at the top of the reply box. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry, then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.

Have fun!

Dave

Nice one Kevin.  I wonder how many of us developed a thirst for something alcoholic after seeing your image.  My wife loves a margarita, but I hate anything with gin in it.   I do love a Piña colada, always with a Del Boy umbrella and slice of pineapple. 😉  Blimey!  That looks disgusting!

There isn't any gin in a margarita, Trevor. It's tequila!

That came from a hasty assumption Jane. Chris likes a margarita, and I often see her with a salted rim. Apparently the gin cocktails she drinks have feijoa juice.

I'm no mixologist, but I wouldn't give anyone that drink without a hue/saturation adjustment layer first.

Gen Fill for the shop front and (I think) Nano Banana (NB) to change the name above to Sunderland.  That is a cool feature.  Make a very loose selection and a simple prompt like 'Change the text to Sunderland'. It makes the change an retains the style perfectly. Note that I did not use all caps in the prompt, but NB used caps anyway, because the original text was all caps.

The most interesting thing about extending the traffic light was the perspective.  I did that using Lazy Nezumi Pro's Vanishing Lines preset to create guide lines, but you can see I did not get it perfect. 😞   If you use LNP mainly for line smoothing, you should absolutely check out its other presets.

I like the shop, Trevor, but that is my kind of traffic light - all green! 🙂

Thanks for including some of the steps you used, it is always good to see how people approach a challenge.

Jacob, I have stolen your idea. This is Vio3 via Firefly and 800 credits. Not great juggling animation, and I had to trim the start and end poinst to get anywhere close to a looping animation.

A couple of points with using Vio3.

  • In the three times I've used it, I made the first frame reference to fit the 720P (1280px x 720px).  I have not tried using a reference with a different aspect ratio, so it might work that way.
  • If your end goal is a looping GIF, that white background makes a lot of difference to file size.  The max size for image uploads on this forum is 10mb, and I was initially seeing about 40mb and having to downsize and reduce colours in the Save-for-Web panel.  This one was under 10mb first try.
  • The workflow is simple. Open the video in Photoshop with the Motion workspace. Crop to size, and go File > Export > Save for Web (Alt Shift Ctrl S) same as you would with a frame animation.  The results are always way better if you start with a video, and it is way easier making the animation in a video timeline.  When I think of all the times I have manually added a second moving object in a frame animation (you have to select each from, and turn on the relevant layer) it makes me want to cry!
  • I've tried knocking out the background so I can place the video over an exising video timeline by using Blend If.  To completely eliminate the white fringe it was also knocking out parts of the shirt and head. There's not much movement of the body, so I copined the video group and used a mask instead of Blend If.  That worked, but only because the subject was not moving.  If you don't mind using Prem Pro or AE you could make the first frame image green or blue.  I just looked and found YouTube videos on keying out the BG with Photoshop.  I've never tried them because it is easier with Prem Pro.  I wonder if it is possible to create the video with transparency? Maybe using a PNG for the first frame reference?
  • When first heard about Firefly video there was mention of credits used for 1080p, 720p and 540p (960px x 540px).  I'm only seeing 720p as an option right now, but if and when 540p becomes available, I was wondering about using it in a matte painting.  So, in the image below, Rey and the robot would have been shot against a green screen, and the entire background is a painting.

In this case the live video is the central area, and nearly all of the Storm Troopers are painted on a matte.

I'm thinking this would give you maximum impact for minimal credits use.  A useful thing if you do not have a full subscription, limited credits.  It would also be an interesting and fun project, and one that I will defitely be having a go at.

Thank you, Dave.

She is most gentle with the fully ripe one snitched from the lemon sale on 219 SFTW Street.

Dave, I believe our plucker is just about to discover not only gravity (almost) like Newton did but also a sensational citrus hybridization repetition (maybe a Key lime nearby).
