Question

Still using PS7 and need advice on creating custom geometric shapes.

I have been using PS7 for years but now I have a different need other that working with photos. I need to design elements to use in creating watch faces for my smart watch. I have an app to use to assemble the elements but I want to create unique shapes to incorporate in the design which makes it necessary to create complex geometric shapes that can be enhanced by adding sharp clean bevels and possibly textures. I cannot find any specific information on doing things like cutting out the center of these shapes to create a transparent opening to overlay on a separate graphic which is usually a picture of a specific texture such as a metal grid or a carbon fiber pattern. I have searched for days now trying to find out how to do this. I would really appreciate some help in any form. I have searched for tutorials on YouTube but they all are centered around different PS versions other than PS7. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Sounds you need to do a bit of 3d work. A free app called Blender should do what you need, including adding textures. The resulting render can then be brought into photoshop in a format you can use. Resulting renders are 2d, so you could rotate the scene or object if you need to do different profiles. The best part is once created that object can be rendered any time you need a different view of that object.
That said, there is some learning curve to go through. So you may or may not be able to get a model done on first day. (depending on the complexity of the object)

I thank you for that suggestion. For my needs, I am not sure about needing a 3D program but since I have not tried that avenue, I will look into what Blender has to offer. I have a sign making software called Flexisign that will let me create the elements I need but when I move those graphics into PS, the edges are not smooth but pixelated enough to make any curves look rough when I try to convert them to bevels. I can make smooth bevels but I need the hard chisel effect and there are too many ripples to make them useful. I know that PS7 is used mainly to manipulate photos but it is the only software that I have ever used for bevels.

Could you post a screenshot of the kind of elements you import into photoshop?

Does Flexisign give you a choice of file formats in which to export the elements, like, for example, pdf ai, or eps?

Photoshop 7 has the pen and shape tools from which one can make some pretty intricate shapes.

Did you find a video on You Tube that shows what you want to do?

If so could you provide a link?

I found a lot of videos on YouTube but none that touched the subject at hand. If and when I do, I will surely share the link here. Keep watching.
