Stock Photo File Compression

Good afternoon to you.

I am havng an issue whereby most of my images are compressed too much by Photoshop. A RAW image that is of file size 13.9 MB is compressed to JPG file size of 667.38KB, which is far lest than the requirement for upload; another of RAW 14.6MB is compressed to JPG 1.7MB, and there are several more. From a total of 19 files 13 files are compressed to file size ranging from 566.19KB to 4.41MB.

Please note:

File size here is not refering to demention (length x width).

Are you able please to refer this to the correct department.

Best wishes

Jacquelin

Thank you evryone for your kind answers, some of which are inssigtful. It would appear the issue has caught the attention of relevant personnel(s) and is now resolved. I have today attempted resaving the affected images. The images are now less compressed when saved as JPG files, hence I'm having larger file sizes. Other files saved since are within the file-size of my expectation. Thanks again.

    Best wishes

The sceenshot is small, but as far as I can tell, most of the image seems to be sky, and sky areas compress really well, resulting in a small file size. So 1.7 MB seems reasonable.

If the image looks good at 100% view, there is nothing wrong with it.

Hi Per Berntsen, thank you for you reply. Just to clarify. The screen shot I posted was in responce to Just Shoot Me comment about my settings. The sky image was not the subject of that screenshot. That sky image is a RAW 13.9MB image compressed to JPG 667.38KB. The image that is reduced to 1.7MB is not posted on this thread, and also it is a plant photo The sky image in the Photoshop frame was rejected for technical issues.

So your initial 1.7kb was a typing mistake and should be read 1.7Mb? 1.7 Mb is not too small for some images.

The Screen Shot you posted is NOT PS. It is ACR. Also if you want larger file size increase the Quality setting to 10 or 12.

Thank you for the bit of details. Camera Raw is a plugin of Photoshop and so whenever a RAW image is opened by Photoshop it goes streight to Camera Raw. If I use Camera Raw to save the image or not I get the same result. The cloud image in the screenshot was saved by Photoshop after removing an item. That compressed to 667.38KB. Ever since I start shooting in RAW Camera Raw is what all my images open in, and most are saved by it. With that said, let's direct our attention to the screenshot. We are not talking about the same screenshot. There is nowhere on that screenshot that shows "Quality 8". Another question I'll ask, what version of Photoshop are you using?
Again the amount of compression is determined by the Quality setting in Save system of ACR or in PS. Have you ever tried Lightroom?

I'm moving this discussion over to the Photoshop forum.

A RAW file that is originally only 13.x MBs in file size is kind of small in today's standards, usually from an older lower MP camera, somewhere around 10-12MP sensor.

The file size of converting that RAW to a JPG in PS is dependent on your settings when saving the JPG file to disk.

I just took a Leica M9 RAW file, a DNG, that was 17+ MBs in file size, from a 18MP sensor. Opened it in PS, which first opened it in Adobe Camera RAW, and then saved it as a JPG with the Quality set at 12. The resulting JPG file size was 12+ MBs.

Taking a leica M8 or Panasonic LX 5 or 100 RAW image, all having around a 10MP sensor and a file size of around 10-13 MBs in size the same jpg convertion resulted in a JPG file size of 6 to 9 MBs in size.

So it is not PS that is doing this but the settings you have selected when saving the file as a JPG.

Thank you for your reply. Please find attached a screenshot copy of the setting while saving. I have been using this camera for about a year now and this is the first I've seen such small files.

    Hi Jacquelin,

Could you add an example file? Especially 1.7kb looks ridiculously low...
