I am trying to find a way to bring paths and linework from illustrator into photoshop such that I can use brushes to stroke the paths. I am unable however to stroke the paths after importing them into photoshop as paths.
This is just a test but it I cant seem to figure out how to make it work.

Name your path first. You can only have one workpath and you risk losing it if it's not named.
Then show your Layers panel and see if the anchor point is on its own layer and the layer can be deleted.
As in Illustrator, the Path Selection tool (black arrow) selects the path; the Direct Selection tool (white arrow) selects anchor points. The difference is they both have the same shortcut "A" and both share the same space in the Tools panel.
See if you can select it and delete it.

Have you tried copying and pasting the paths from Illustrator? When you paste the path in Photoshop, you should see the following dialog:
Select Path.
Then go to the Paths panel (Window > Paths...) to the panel menu (the hamburger menu in the upper right), and select Stroke Path... Then you can set which tool you'd like to use to stroke the path (it could be the Brush tool, Pencil tool, or a variety of other tools):
Then whatever brush you have set up and selected should apply to your path:

Adding to this, if you have a path selected, selecting any painting tool (Brush, Smudge Burn/Dodge, etc.), and pressing Enter will stroke with that tool.
