The ability is already there for smart objects, just not from the move tool contextual right click:

It's also available in the Propetties panel. I'm not in front of Photoshop to check, however it's probably to be found in other places, including actions and scripting.

You are right but for doing such a small task one has to go through such a long process and even in that there is no Replace Image option but one has to do it as per one's ability… A small Replace Image Option is available either in the Image Menu or by right clicking on the image or in the Contextual Bar, then in just one click we can replace any image with any other image… All other types of Image Editing Software have this simple facility which is available with the Normal Option.

I can't comment on other apps, can you provide details, screenshots to illustrate your point for the devs?
I'm just an end user, like you, I can only point out where the existing functionality is to use for now.
I can imagine that for every user that may want this feature, there would be others that don't.

It doesn't really make any sense except for smart objects (where you do have a separate image "inserted" into the primary one), and as Stephen points out, it already exists.
For a regular image, what you have open is the image. To replace it, close it and open the other.
The closest possibility that would make any conceptual sense, is a "replace layer content" command. But even that is pretty straightforward already.
