tapered brush in photoshop?

I'm having trouble with getting a tapered end to a brush stroke. I have a pen but the pen pressure doesn't do anything. No matter how light or hard I press the end always has a round end. I have tried resetting the tools, changing settings in shape dynamics or brush tip shape; nothing works. I don't understand what's going on, do I have to reinstall the program or did I just miss a key setting?

Have you the changed control setting in shape dynamics to pen pressure?

[I've added your screen shot to your post to save people time]

Usually, when the preview at the bottom of Brush Settings shows a tapered stroke as in your screen shot, all is well and it works.  You'll generally see a pling (exclamation mark) to the left of the control when Pen Pressure is selected if there is driver or API issue.  So I would have expected your's to work.

What tablet are you using?
Are you using the Windows Ink or Wintab API?

Does your tablet work OK in other apps?  You can install Krita as an alternative and it is completely free.
