Text as a mask?

I am trying to work out how to emulate the magazine cover for dirt bike magazine.

The feature I Am trying to make is the white with the see through text of the name of the magazine showing the picture/layer beneath.

Any help greatly appreciated

So based on your description you want sample number 1 below. But based on your example I think you want sample number 2 below.

The white rectangle has the text saying "DIRTBIKE" knocked out of the white rectangle. You want the guy riding the bike to be behind that white rectangle and showing through the letters that are used as a negative mask frame.

In Photoshop, move that white text frame rectangle to the top layer. It has the mask on it, and can be used as a window for all layers below it. But if you want something like you show in the example, the dirtbike rider is masked out over the original background, or over a gradient, and then stacked over the white framed text with the mask. See my second image for an example. You can see I have the dancer jumping masked out.

Depending on whether the text is solid or screened, a vector text/masthead logo may reproduce better.

Another way to to set the Fill Opacity af the text to 0%, and set Knockout to Shallow:

If you want to mask the image so that your subject matter (the biker) and the text are what show up,

1. Make a white background layer below your photo

2. Select your photo layer

3. Make a selection of your subject

4. Click the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom of the Layers panel (3rd from the left)

5. Enter your text

6. Select the text (Control + click, Command + click on a Mac)

7. Add that selection to the layer mask. One way is to use Control + Delete on the layer mask when white is your background color.

8. Turn off visibility for the live text layer.
