Text Formatting not working on all Fonts

Question

I can no longer apply text formatting like italic, bold, etc to all fonts, only selected ones by the program.

This is an issue present in the latest update where the right side bar has been removed.

In order to circumvent this, I have to copy and paste text from another PSD that already has these formats.

You should be able to apply bold and italic to any typeface that includes bold, italic, and bold italic (not all type designers include these). From your Window menu, reopen the options bar and Properties panel. Bold and Italic will be available when you have your Type tool with text selected.

In addition, you can also open and use the Character and Paragraph panels.
