I like to put my name and the year on my pictures when I am finished with them. My name goes on fine but whenever I put the year in I get some sysmbols that look like presents with bows on them. the layer panel shows the numbers but now the picture.

It sounds like you just had the wrong font selected? Sounds almost like a "dingbat"font.

If you are using Photoshop 2019, you can just double-click on the text, and then at the TOP LEFT of Photoshop you will see the font list. You can then just choose a different font. You could even click that list, and instead of choosing a Font on YOUR computer.... you can click the Green Typekit icon, that will take you to a website where you can download or look for some fonts that you might like. They have thousands!

Hope that helps!
