TEXT turns into a SELECTED OUTLINE after hitting the CHECKMARK...

Hello. I've been using Photshop for 15+ years and must've recently screwed something up that I can't figure out how to fix...

When I create a new layer and open the Text tool, it automatically defaults to a vertical position. (That's not a big deal... but it might help explain what's happening?) In addition, (as I'm typing... before I click the "commit" checkmark) the background turns red--much like a mask--until I select the "commit" checkmark.

Once I hit that checkmark... I have an empty layer, but the words I typed are selected as an outline. (Note: There is no text layer for me to double-click and manipulate if wanted. There is no text... just an outline of the words.

How do I fix this? I've tried resetting the tools to their default, and I've even uninstalled Photoshop (CC) and reinstalled it... but it's still doing the same thing.

Update: I FINALLY realized I had the "vertical type MASK tool" selected instead of the "horizontal type tool".

I guess I didn't look close enough to which tool was selected (as I always use the "T" shortcut for text, and it somehow defaulted to the text-mask tool).
