text will not highlight?

PS 20.0.1 and Mac OS 10.14.2 on 2013 Mac Pro. Text tool seems to select text - I can type - but selection is not highlighted, so I'm typing blind! I don't use much type, so not sure just when or in what version this became an issue. Have tried "reset tool" to no avail.

Maybe it's a Mac issue. I'm on a Windows 10 machine running PS 20.0.1 and the text tool highlighting text is working fine.
