The Command "doesnt matter" is not currently available

I am totally stumped. My actions used to work, I have scoured forums and tried just about everything I can think of. But still not working. In fact even the built in actions don't work, so its not just mine. Any time it hits any sort of action aside from duplicating a layer it says "The command XXXXX is not currently available". Ive tried opening a new ps blank image and just tried simple things. NOTHING WORKS!

Can someone please shed some light as to what Im doing wrong, Im sure its a user error thing but don't know.

Also for what its worth, ive reset all my tools and preferences.

Thanks

Guido

Thanks, forgive the newbie question but. I thought when you use the pen it automatically creates the path. I do see a path when I click the path file after using the pen.

Can you detail steps I would need to take.

A bit of background, I am trying to delete the background for a few hundred pictures which are static in nature. The background and object do not move.

    thanks

Well... I figured it out. What you said started to make sense. I had to select in the actions menu "allow tool recording". Once I did that, when the pen tool went active, it automatically registered a path.

    Thanks for the help.

Please post a screenshot with the pertinent. Panels (including the Action fully expanded in the Actions Panel) visible.

What have you done for trouble-shooting so far and how did you restore Preferences?

In this example I made an action with my pen where I want to highlight an area and delete it. Once it hits the path it gives me this error. However, as I said before it doesn't matter which action. Vignette for example (the stock one with PS), give me this same type of error just on a different command.

As for resetting, I went to general preferences and clicked "reset preferences on Quit". As far as what I have tried:

-My image mode is set to 8bits/channel. That was something I read in forums which needed to be set.

-Thought it might be my image so I just opened a blank new ps image and tried a bunch of stock actions and my actions. Same results.

-Countless forums which people have asked the same question, just no one was able to really answer aside from the 8 bit thing above.

I see no step in the action before the select work path step that would create a work path.   So for that action to work the active document must have a work path created before running the Action.  The document must have a work path or the action will fail in the select work path step like you see. For there is no work path to select.  The Path is not available.
