The filter lensblurr delivers a totally different result under an M1 MacStudio than on an Intel Mac

When I apply the Lens Blur filter with the exact same values to a layer on a MacStudio M1, i get a totally different result than on a MacBook Pro with Intel processor.
The results cannot be reproduced at all.
The same happens with filters in the filter gallery such as tilt-shift filters.
Both computers have PS 2023

Am i the only one that has this problem? Tested it on an iMac i7 and it is the same.
The result of the lensblur filter or blurr filtergalerie are totally different on a M1 MacStudio vs. a i7 Mac by using the exact same values.

Can you show some screenshots to demonstrate the issue?

Hi,
yes here are two screenshots from the same file and filter used with same values but extreme different results.
Big problems occure if someone has to blurr other photos with same filter values but got a new M1 Mac.
Same Version of PS 2023 is used.
The latest PS Version has the same issues…

What macOS are you running on the Intel Macs?

On the Intel versions, if after you apply the settings you have in the screenshots you posted, you click Preview off/on do the results change?

I can't say why your getting different results on your Intel Macs, but i can say the second screenshot

where things appear blown out is correct.
I tested a 2022 M1 Mac Studio macOS Ventura 13.6 photoshop 2024 (ps ver 25.0). A 2012 Intel

MacBook Pro macOS Monterey 12.7 photoshop 2024 (ps version 25.0), and a 2001 PowerPC Power

Mac Quicksilver G4 Tiger 10.4.11 Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 and they all gave results similiar to your second

screenshot when using the same settings.

I can suggest you try on the Intel Macs going to Adobe Photoshop>Preferences>Technology Previews

checking Deactivate Native Canvas, restarting photoshop and see if that makes a difference.

Or try Adobe Photoshop>Preferences>Performance, unchecking Multithreaded compositing and restarting photoshop.

Thank you very much, I'll have to send this to my client. They all still work with Intel macs and the results look like my Intel screenshot.
Only with my M1 does it look like this with the blown out lights.

Thats awkward. I send the thread to my client and they tested it and i tested ist an my iMac intel. Unfortunately the results are as in the first screenshots. changing the settings does not change anything.
Must be an unknown bug ?
We try to avoid the Lensblurrfilter and Tilt shift filter in our future workflow…

There is one more setting to try in Adobe Photoshop>Preferences>Performance

Under Advanced Settings uncheck GPU compositing and restart photoshop.

You aren't running Photoshop 2023 on Catalina are you? It requires Big Sur, as does the previous release.

At my iMac it is PS 22 (23.5.5) under Catalina. It is so confusing that PS 2023 is Version 24.7.1
But at my Clients they run PS 2023 under Monterey on i7.

I would be remiss if i didn't suggest resetting the photoshop preferences to see if that makes any difference.

Deleting the preferences and starting with a completely new PS unfortunately did not result in any change. It seems that the values for the lights (brightness/brightness and threshold/ thresholdhold) are calculated completely differently on my M1 Mac Studio than on a i7 Mac.

I spoke to my hardware dealer today.
He has also heard from other customers that there are differences in the results of some filters.
However, he does not have a solution for the problem…

I am experiencing this issue now. I use lens blur on a daily basis for my work. I went from an iMac 2019 to a new Mac Studio M2. I am not getting the same bokeh effect at all and the whites just blow out completely. I have tried everything. This is REAL issue as not I cannot product the same results as I have always been doing. My QA manager kept asking why I was using gaussian blur which is exactly how lens blur looks now. I am not happy with this at all. Spent all this money and now I am screwed. I tried field blur, I tried lens blur in Photoshop Raw, NOTHING is giving me that effect that I was getting on my iMac. I chatted to someone at Adobe who just said reinstall photoshop. That did not do anyting.....PLEASE HELP!!!

Ok i finally found an Intel iMac that i could replicate the issue running macOS Monterey 12.7.3 with Photoshop 2024 (ps ver 25.5)

I'll post the About This Mac and the Photoshop Help>System Info so you can compare it to yours and see if there are any commonalities.

My hardware dealer suspects that these filters are calculated differently due to the i7 vs M1, M2 cpu than under the graphics cards under i7. However, he has not yet received an answer from Adobe and not from Apple. He assumes that because of all the Ai-stuff they are not interested in the needs of the few professionals who need consistency in their workflow...

Wondering if I should update to Sonoma 14.3.1? I am currently on Ventura 13.5. Just worried as have heard a lot of complaints about the new OS.... Don't want to do that and nothing helps. I was on Monteray with my iMac and that worked. But if this is just an intel vs chip thing, then I don't know if changing the OS is going to solve anything. 😕

i would not update yet. My dealer's IT employee says it doesn't help, but there are other instabilities. He says it's better to wait for one or two more system updates.

Too late... I updated... Did not solve a thing. I have run through everything I can. Seems there is no resolve around this. I literally have to go purchase a second hand Macbook tomorrow purely to run my lens blurs! Need to keep working. Hopefully one day this gets resolved.

Yes, it's a shame that Adobe hasn't solved this so that the values lead to identical results regardless of the hardware...
