the new gradient tool - gradient or classic gradient - no longer work in layer masks

why does the new gradient tool - no matter if gradient or classic gradient - no longer work in layer masks? in general, the new gradient tool is just a deterioration in the workflow. In addition, it was previously possible to continue working while saving a large file, but not anymore. my feeling regression after regression in the daily routine with photoshop. instead feature after feature that nobody needs in the real daly workflow!

The added UI for me does also work on a mask when I tried, which is certainly a cool bonus! However, it will stop being able to continue with that UI if you did certain further changes to the mask, which only makes sense and is explained in tuts like the one from Julieanne Kost.

It does. For me at least. When you are in the gradient tool look top left in the options bar (I'm sure yoyu have done this already) set from Gradient to Classic Gradient and it works for me.
