Can anybody help please. I am creating a Bokah effect as shown on the PTC using the following method.
1. Create new layer and fill with black
2. Add noise (slider on about 4 or 6)
3. Go to image>adjustments>threshold and move slider until there are pin pricks of white.
4. Use field blur to give Bokah effect.
All goes well until i click on the OK button on Threshold, instead of getting dots of white light i get a grey fill with lots of noise, this is not what i wanted or how it is supposed to go.
I used this method recently and it worked well, with the new release of PS it is not working. I have reset my preferences but cannot see where my problem is.
Screenshots attached.

In his video, Jesus takes two blur steps. One between Add noise and using threshold and a later blur after threshold.

Dave, I followed Jesus's tutorial completely but cannot replicate the effect. I have used this method in the past with no problem.

Looking at your history panel you appear to have missed the blur step between add noise and use threshold

-Dave - I believe you have to apply the Threshold prior to blurring it.
-CKimages - I get the same thing as you and it seems to be working correctly. The further left you take the threshold slider, the more "pinpricks" you will get, which looks like what you have above. The amount of blurring you then get following the application of the threshold will determine how large the circles are, and if you blur it greatly then of course you'll have more or less an overall blurring effect. Now I haven't done the full tutorial so maybe there's something I'm missing here, but as for the operation you describe above, it seems to work fine, at least at my end.

Ahh, ok. I've not had time to do that tutorial so I missed that. Thanks Dave.

Gentlemen, thank you for your assistance. I tried this technique numerous times and got into a vicious circle. Dave, as you so rightly pointed out, I was missing the Gaussian Blur after the Noise Filter. My apologies for any inconvenience caused, sometimes it is easier to take a step backwards and rethink things.
