Hello everyone,

I work for a German library that is concerned with the long term preservation of digital documents, including multiple millions of scans from historic print media. All of those scans are stored in baseline TIF 6 format. However, during the processing of those images, some of them are processed in Adobe Photoshop (version CS3 and above). During this process, the TIFF tag 34377 (Photoshop Image Resources) is added to the files, thus using a tag from the private tag section.

In the field of digital preservation, being able to validate files (both "as a whole" and embedded) against a given specification is key to being able to provide access to the stored information for future generations. We have already created a validation tool to validate the structure of TIFFs and also a few aspects of embedded ICC profiles. Now, to guarantee preservation for those files, we'd like to also validate the contents of tag 34377. Currently, however, the contents of this tag are not part of any public documentation.

Hence, my question is if Adobe could publish their specification of what tag 34377 may contain, what it may not contain and how the data referenced by it is structured internally. Also, any additional information on the internals of this tag would be very much appreciated.

In a more general context, a public list of the private TIFF tag IDs (32768 - 65000) that have already been assigned and their respective owners would be extremely helpful for the whole digital preservation community.

Thank you very much everyone!

P.S.: The link to the TIFF 6 specification currently doesn't work (https://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/tiff/TIFF6.pdf).
